Kobo Arc is a 7-inch Android tablet, launched a few months ago with two Kobo ebook reader and Kobo Glo, the latter already available in Italy by Mondadori. According to the latest rumors, Kobo Arc should be available in the United States by the end of November and almost simultaneously on other markets such as the European one. Actually the device is already in advance in some online shops, but expects to days the arrival of stocks in stock. In the meantime, however, our colleague of Liliputing succeeded in making a fast free trial, offering us a series of live photographs.
Michael Kozlowski by GoodeReader has made a video about unpacking the package and on the first launch of Kobo Arc. Pending a more thorough test, offers us its considerations. Arc is fast and robust, at least as a Nook or a Kindle Tablet Fire HD 7. Good news also for the user interface, which gives the possibility to organize your content, customize them and get tips on others. Good vision!
For those who don’t remember, Kobo Arc has a 7 inch, IPS-style, with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, a TI OMAP processor 4470 1.5 GHz dual core, 16 GB to 64 GB with built-in memory. The tablet is based on Kobo Android OS 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, with some signed software Kobo. It’s just that the element that distinguishes it from a Nook or a Kindle tablet Fire: Kobo Arc is a Google certified device. Although its home screen is not typical of an Android device, the Terminal has full access to the Google Store.
The user, therefore, in addition to download eBooks, magazines and other content from the Kobo shop, you can also download applications, books, music, movies and more from Google. In Kobo Arc lacks a high-resolution display, but it is the price one of the strengths of this device. The 16 GB model costs about $ 200, while the 32 GB will narrow the $ 250. The top-of-the-line version, instead, will have a price tag of $ 300 with 64 GB of internal storage (a real novelty for the category of low-cost tablet catches to 16-32 GB). None of the versions however has a microSD slot, then it will be impossible to expand storage.
From first impressions reveal another element that distinguishes the Kobo its tablet competitor — frame. Looking at the photographs, in fact, we note how Arc has a rather thick frame, slightly raised, relative to the screen. This solution facilitates taking the tablet, when you read an ebook without worrying about accidentally touch the screen but a similar footprint might give trouble discerning readers.
Similarly, the cover of Kobo Arc consists of soft-touch plastic, which makes the tablet slightly bulkier respects to 7 inches around, but on the other hand makes it easier to “grip”, an element that should not be underestimated especially in eReader. According to first impressions, it is also interesting to customize Android software, which will allow the user to create “album” of content on a particular topic and share them on the Internet. Especially useful is the option to “Discover” that identifies the ebook that you are reading, suggesting other interesting content connected to it.
At first glance, therefore, Kobo Arc for conquest price, hardware equipment and software solutions. We’ll see if these early opinions will be confirmed by further tests.
